“A Raisin in the Sun” is a Timely Classic

What can viewers expect from The Game in season 5?

The unexpected and to be taking on a ride!  It will be fun and at times a little crazy.  They can expect the characters to have a lot more layers this season.  The writers have done a great job giving the character some depth, having them deal with real issues and giving the viewers some good “water-cooler talk”

How have you adjusted to your success?

It is a very humbling experience.  Acting is what I do, but I am not defined by it.  As you mentioned, I have been nominated several times and each time it just feels very humbling being in the same company with such fine actors who work hard and are excellent at their craft.

How has your character, Tasha Mack, evolved in Season 5?

As you have seen she has been unpredictable and focused on having a relationship.  However, this season she is going to be more focused on discovering herself.  She is still will be unpredictable at times, but she is going to look more on the inside.  Tasha will work on getting herself together, look at some past things, grow and develop more into who she wants herself to be.

With so much success in comedy, is it your niche?

It is interesting you asked that because I did not start off with comedy as my focus.  When I was at Howard I focused more on dramatic acting and the classics.  So I can not say it’s my niche.  However, professionally it has come quite easy and I feel very at home with it.  It has been nice and a blessing to have the opportunity to work on projects that are steadier and consistent.

Being a person of influence, how do like giving back?

Well approximately 16 years ago a friend of mine, Tracy Coley, and I started Amazing Grace Conservatory.  We were both struggling actors at the time, but we had a passion for our craft and a passion for kids.  Growing up in Los Angeles I remember how important it was to have the arts in school.  Today many programs have been eliminated and our youth do not have the creative outlets they need for personal expression.  My passion and vision is that Amazing Grace Conservatory would be a haven for youth, a home away from home.  A place for them to develop their talents and to discover who they are!  If you have the time, I could talk about this for hours.  Amazing Grace is a real passion of mine because it is so close to my heart.

The Power Player Magazine says thanks to Wendy Raquel Robinson, a true thespian at heart, for taking the time to sit and rap with us.  Your truly are a “Power Player” and we look forward to seeing what more you bring to The Game this season. Link and find out more about “The Game” on BET at http://www.bet.com/shows/the-game.html

January is not just the beginning of a new year, but it also kicks-off a new season for the hit CW/BET comedy-drama The Game. The Power Player Lifestyle Magazine was fortunate to get a moment, sit down and PowerRap with one of its “Power Players,” Wendy Raquel Robinson, who plays the funny and unpredictable sports agent Tasha Mack.

Robinson attended Howard University earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama.  She appeared in several plays such as the Vagina Monologues, Agnes of God and A Mid-Summer’s Night Dream and would attest that her time spent at Howard was truly an impressionable and transforming experience for her.  She made her acting career debut in 1993 on an episode of Martin.  The following year she landed one of her best known roles as the high school principal Regina Grier, on the WB sitcom The Steve Harvey Show, which aired for six seasons.

Now, Wendy Raquel Robinson is working with a different cast, on a hit show and loving every minute of it! She joined the cast of The Game in 2007.  She has been nominated for several awards and this year is no exception being nominated for an NAACP Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for The Game.

J.J. ABRAMS BEGINS PRODUCTION ON THE NEXT “STAR TREK” MOVIE

Thursday, January 22nd, was opening night, for the critically-acclaimed Ebony Repertory Theatre production of Lorraine Hansberry’s American classic “A Raisin in the Sun,” playing at Center Theatre Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre. With rich performances that were both captivating and riveting, Lorraine Hansberry’s story comes relevantly to life!

Set in Chicago during the 1950s, “A Raisin in the Sun” portrays an African-American family and its pursuit of a better life while facing the obstacles of conflicting aspirations, betrayal and racism. Central to the story is a $10,000 life insurance payment that symbolizes freedom in various ways to each family member, including the possibility of buying the family’s first house.  Shining a spotlight on America's struggle to overcome its past, “A Raisin in the Sun” pays tribute to those whose courage helped shape a future filled with faith in the fundamental decency and unlimited capacity of the human spirit.  In light of the current global economy, Rahsad presents the playwright’s message of deferred dreams and hope many Americans need to hear today!

“A Raisin in the Sun” is directed by Phylicia Rashad, who starred in the 2004 Broadway revival and who won the Tony Award for Best Actress.  This was the first time in Tony history that an African-American actress won in this category.  Her Los Angeles directing debut, with the Ebony Repertory Theatre production, was a smashing success!  I had a brief moment afterwards to speak with her about the evening’s performance.  It was clear she was pleased and I quote, “I wanted to capture the heart of the people…” and you did, Bravo! Bravo!

The cast members included (in alphabetical order) Kenya Alexander, Keith Arthur Bolden, Brandon David Brown, Kevin T. Carroll, Jason Dirden, Deidrie Henry, Amad Jackson, Scott Mosenson, Kem Saunders, Kim Staunton and Ellis E. Williams.  All were stellar in their craft making us laugh, cry and sometimes squirm in our seats as they delivered   the playwright’s at times gritty but often beautifully poetic dialogue with honesty and potency.

The scenic design is by Michael Ganio, costume design by Ruth E. Carter, lighting design by Elizabeth Harper, sound design by Bob Blackburn and wig and hair design by Carol F. Doran. The production stage manager is David Blackwell.

Lorraine Hansberry was 29 when “A Raisin in the Sun” opened on Broadway in 1959.  She was the first African-American woman to have a play produced on Broadway. It only seems fitting that the Ebony Repertory Theatre produce the play today.  Founded under the leadership of Producer Wren T. Brown and the late Artistic Director Israel Hicks, ERT’s commitment is to bring diverse, high standard, professional performing arts to the Mid-City community, as well as the greater Los Angeles area.  ERT’s mission is to create, develop, nurture and sustain a world-class professional theatre rooted in the experience of the African Diaspora and shaped by a dynamic perspective that incorporates an understanding of, and respect for, the unique African-American journey to freedom.

“A Raisin in the Sun” is another production presented by LA’s Theatre Company the Center Theatre Group/Kirk Douglas Theatre at 9820 Washington Blvd., Culver City, California and will run until February 19.2012.  A quaint venue with easy parking, great restaurants and near by shopping, The Kirk Douglas Theatre always a great place to see live theatre performances.  For more information about future shows contact the Center Theatre Group Audience Services at (213) 628-2772, in person at the Center Theatre Group box office, on-line at www.CenterTheatreGroup.org

In 1989, Evers' widow Myrlie, who had been trying to bring De La Beckwith to justice for over 25 years, believes she has what it takes to bring him to trial again. Although most of the evidence from the old trial had disappeared, Bobby DeLaughter, an assistant District Attorney, decides to help her despite being warned that it might hurt his political aspirations and despite the strain that it caused in his marriage. ABOUT THE FILM

Oscar® nominees Queen Latifah (“Chicago,” “Hairspray”) and Dolly Parton (“Steel Magnolias,” “Nine to Five”) star in Alcon Entertainment’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Joyful Noise,” a funny and inspirational story of music, hope, love and renewal.

The small town of Pacashau, Georgia, has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition. The choir has always known how to sing in harmony, but the discord between its two leading ladies now threatens to tear them apart. Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old. Shaking things up even more is the arrival of G.G.’s rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). Randy has an ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose’s beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer), and the sparks between the two teenagers are causing even more friction between G.G. and Vi Rose. If these two strong-willed women can put aside their differences for the good of the people in their town, they—and their choir—may make the most joyful noise of all.

Starring with Latifah and Parton are Keke Palmer (“Akeelah and the Bee”), Courtney B. Vance (“Extraordinary Measures”), Jeremy Jordan (Broadway’s “Bonnie and Clyde”), and Kris Kristofferson (“Dolphin Tale”). Rounding out the main cast are Dexter Darden, Angela Grovey, Paul Woolfolk and Jesse L. Martin. Power-Up with www.joyfulnoisethemovie.com
