Thicke’s wife, Paula Patton, is a staple of the movies, of course, and seen most recently in Precious.  Now, after years of begging off acting offers because he did not feel he could handle two careers at once, Thicke has just signed on with Fox for a feature film that is due out in 2011. No worries, Thicke is hardly neglecting his own music career, as the care and craft put into Sex Therapy: The Experience will attest. For more information visit, http://www.robinthicke.com/

Beverly Hills-If you want to know about how a secret or two can divide or unite a family, go see City Island, starring tough guy Andy Garcia. City Island is a film full of secrets, agendas and vendettas within the Rizzo family, led by patriarch Vince Rizzo (Garcia), a no-nonsense prison guard at the Dalegrove Correctional Facility, just outside of the bright lights of New York.

But, ironically, Vince’s rugged posterior at work doesn’t seem to translate at home where he is too afraid to tell his wife, Joyce, that he has taken up acting lessons. Instead of manning up, Vince is too scared to draw the wrath of his wife that he tells Joyce (played exceptionally well by Julianna Margulies) that he is playing poker. Vince’s hideaway from home leads to a warm friendship he strikes up with a very lovely Britain (Emily Mortimer) during his acting escapade.

As the movie moves along, it is clear that while Vince cherishes the moments of being away from his dysfunctional family. However, his fellow actor is hoping for more than just a casual stroll along the beach, even though she knows he is a married man with two children.

The secrets don’t stop there. Vince has another secret he’s not sharing: He has a son from a previous relationship. That son, Tony (a self-assured, yet caring Steven Strait) is in lockup at Vince’s prison. Vince decides to give the kid a break and places him under supervisory custody at his home for 30 days to get to know his abandoned son. This is where things get messy. Joyce feels unwanted by Vince and begins to crave sexual desires for the hunky and ripped Tony, who is a little enamored with the lady of the house.

In the meantime, Vince’s daughter, who is supposed to be home from a college break, has her own demons she doesn’t anyone to know. The main one being she is working as a stripper to pay for her college tuition that was supposed to be covered by a scholarship. Vivian (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) forgets to mention to her parents she lost her scholarship and got kick out of school because of smoking pot.  To top it off, Vince’s youngest son, Vince Jr. (Ezra Miller) turns out to be the freak of the week as he basks in his sexual attraction to plus size women.

The movie plot moves along well, the actors all know their roles well and the script is crisp and does what it intends to do. And that is to create real-life family situation with real-life issues confronting them. Growing up in a family full of secrets, City Island should hit home with most folks, because we all have something we’d rather not share other members of the family. City Island is a terrific movie with the warmth and personal touch of a Sunday afternoon stroll. The Power Player Lifestyle Magazine gives “The Blind Side” a 4 on the 5-point PowerMeter.  For more information and trailers of the film go to: http://www.cityislandmovie.com

The Jacksons A Family Dynasty

2010 Looks To be Another Great Year for Movies

The Film Report by Brent Lowe

In 2009, the box office set another record-breaking year with $9.9 billion in revenue.  This exceeds 2007 and 2008 numbers of $9.6 each.  While top grossing films like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($402 million) and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince ($301 million) lead the way to the box office’s success, the true heroes of 2009 were the many sleeper hits that crept up the ladder unsuspectingly.  Movies like The Hangover ($277 mil.), The Blind Side ($166 mil), The Proposal ($163 mil.) and Taken ($145 mil.) were key factors in propelling the numbers.

With 2009 now in the record books, there are great expectations for 2010. Power Player Magazine wants to highlight some of the most anticipated films for 2010.  It is yet to be known which films will emerge as the sleeper hits, but here some that are sure to impact the box office significantly.

Book of Eli

Usually January isn’t a great month for the box office but this film has lots of buzz around it.  The story centers on a lone hero named Eli (Denzel Washington) who must fight his way across the wasteland of post apocalyptic America to protect a sacred book that might hold the key to saving the future of humanity. Release date: January 15.

Shutter Island

History shows that thrillers don’t usually make a dent in box office numbers but when you have movie juggernauts like Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, and Leonardo DiCaprio that could change.  "Shutter Island" is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.  Release date: February 19

Alice in Wonderland

Mixing the imaginative mind of Tim Burton with the eccentricity of Johnny Depp in a fantastical fairy tale setting is definitely something of intrigue.  This adventure film is expected to deliver special effects and costumes to dazzle the mind.  Release date: March 5

Iron Man 2

Sequels to blockbuster films have always proven to be successful and it shouldn’t be any different for this mega hit from 2007.   In "Iron Man 2," the world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the armored Super Hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces. Jon favreau returns as director. Release date: May 7

Shrek Forever

The highest grossing animation of all time is back with another installment.  It is yet to be seen if this movie will have the legs of its predecessors, but it will surely make impact for the summer.  In this one, a bored and domesticated Shrek pacts with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin to get back to feeling like a real ogre again, but when he's duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away -- where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met -- he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love. Release date: May 21

Prince of Persia: Sands Of Time

From the team that brought the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy to the big screen, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films present "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," an epic action-adventure set in the mystical lands of Persia. A rogue prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (Gemma Arterton) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world. Release date: May 28

Toy Story 3

This is the long awaited sequel to the franchise that set the benchmark computer animation. In it this one, Andy is now a young adult, departing for college, and his toys, including Woody and Buzz Lightyear, are being sent to storage. Before his toys can be put in the attic, they are accidentally thrown away and are picked up by the garbage men. The toys find themselves at a local day-care center where they must try to survive pre-school children. Release date: June 18

Twilight Saga: Eclipse

What else can be said about the phenomenal success of the Twilight series.  In “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob—knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life. Release date: June 30

Salt

Original written for Tom Cruise, Salt now stars Angelina Jolie as a CIA officer who is fingered as a Russian sleeper spy. She eludes capture by superiors who are convinced he is out to assassinate the president. While trying to reunite with her family, she struggles to prove someone else is the traitor. Release date: July 23.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

This will be a 2-part series in the final adventure of Harry Potter.  Part 2 is set for release 2011.  Here Potter attempts to bring an end to his nemesis, Lord Voldemort who now has control over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to finish Dumbledore's work and find the rest of the Horcruxes to defeat the Dark Lord. But little hope remains for them, so everything they do must go as planned. Release date: November 19.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Lucy and Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace, where they encounter King Caspian aboard the royal ship Dawn Treader. They join him on a quest across the eastern sea for eight missing lords of Narnia; along the way, they encounter delights, dangers, and transformations before reaching the edge of the world and Aslan's country. Release date: December 10.

The Recording Academy and Clive Davis will continue the tradition of the annual Pre-GRAMMY Gala. This exclusive, star-studded celebration — attended by artists and industry VIPs in music, film and television and featuring special musical performances — will take place on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., the evening before the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards.

As part of the evening's festivities, the 2010 GRAMMY Salute To Industry Icons will honor Universal Music Group Worldwide Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Doug Morris. The Academy will present Morris with the President's Merit Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the music industry and the impact his efforts have had on music and the business of music. Past recipients of the GRAMMY Salute To Industry Icons President's Merit Award include Clive Davis, Ahmet Ertegun , Mo Ostin, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, and Berry Gordy.

"We are delighted to be continuing the tradition of the Pre-GRAMMY Gala that Clive began 30 years ago, and to be partnering with him again in what truly is a magical evening of music and memories," said Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow . "This year, we are humbled to honor another music industry great in Doug Morris, who has had a profound impact on the music business throughout his dynamic and rich career. With his creative vision and digital strategies, he continues to explore and shape innovative new ways to bring great artists and their music to fans around the globe, while being a staunch advocate of artists' rights."

A graduate of Columbia University, Morris began his music career as a songwriter. He wrote the Chiffons' 1966 "Sweet Talkin' Guy" and produced such hit records as Brownville Station's "Smokin' In The Boys Room." He launched his own label called Big Tree Records, which was acquired by Atlantic Records in 1978 and would mark the beginning of a 17-year successful run with Warner Music. In 1980, he was appointed President of Atlantic Records, and developed co-venture deals with such renowned labels as Interscope, Matador, and Rhino. In 1994, he was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Warner Music U.S., and under his strategic leadership established Atlantic Nashville, launched EastWest Records, and created A*Vision Entertainment.

Continuing his legacy as a music industry leader, Morris began his tenure with Universal Music Group when he was appointed Chairman and CEO in 1995. Under his direction, the label has grown to become the world's largest music company, evolving from a record company into a full-fledged music entertainment company. Morris' digital strategies have led to the monetization of online music videos and numerous direct-to-consumer initiatives both online and mobile — all of which have helped position Universal Music Group as the industry's digital music leader. Most recently, Morris created VEVO, the new premium music video and entertainment service powered by YouTube, which will be launching later this year. Morris has also worked with some of the most popular and influential artists over the past four decades including Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, the Rolling Stones, and U2.

Morris serves on the board of directors of CBS Corporation and Activision Blizzard. He also serves on the board of directors of The Robin Hood Foundation, an organization that targets poverty in New York City by finding and funding the most effective programs and partnering with them to maximize results. He also serves on the board for the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a not-for-profit research and education institution that is at the forefront of efforts in molecular biology and genetics to generate knowledge that will yield better diagnostics and treatments for cancer and neurological diseases. He received the City of Hope 's Spirit of Life Award in 2008.

The Pre-GRAMMY Gala is part of the GRAMMY Week series of events, culminating with Music's Biggest Night. The 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards will take place on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

You need some good music and some good food, and you need your woman or your partner.”

The holiday season would not be complete without a Hollywood romantic comedy.  So, Did You Hear About the Morgans? No, not another question; actually, the title of Hugh Grant's latest seasonal escapade.  The comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? follows a highly successful couple, Meryl and Paul Morgan (Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant), who appears to live a perfect life in New York City despite their dissolving marriage.  Unfortunately, Paul’s extramarital affair with another woman has put The Morgan’s marriage in jeopardy. Now separated Paul and Meryl seem destined for divorce court. But Paul doesn’t want to give up on them just yet so he asks Meryl out to dinner so they can talk things over.

During the after-dinner walk home Meryl and Paul witness a man being shot and thrown to the street. To make their luck extra rotten the killer (Michael Kelly) spots them but the couple is able to escape before he can add them to his fatality list. When Paul and Meryl approach the cops they are asked to go into the Witness Relocation Program. Until the assassin is found the safest place for The Morgans to be is out of NYC and so they are moved to a sleepy town in Wyoming called Ray. As the assassin works non-stop to track The Morgans down the urban-savvy couple have their hands full trying to acclimate themselves with country life.

Honestly, I did not know what to except from this film but since I’m a huge fan of Sarah Jessica Parker as I grew to love her as the cute, corky, confused Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and The City); I figured why not attend the screening of this film.  If you are planning to see this movie I have to mention that the comedy is pretty dry and corny. Like similar films that have come before it Did You Hear About The Morgans? mostly consists of Paul and Meryl complaining about how much they miss the city and how weird a place the great outdoors is. They can’t jog because the air is too clean. They can’t ride horses because Meryl is allergic. They don’t like eating out because there’s no anti-smoking section.

Aside from the “city vs. country” shtick there’s also the broken relationship between Paul and Meryl. Will their isolation in Wyoming bring them closer together?  Let’s not pretend as if we have not seen films with this storyline over and over again. If you walk into this thinking the two won’t at least end the story as good friends then I want to tell you it never snows in Chicago. The most exciting plotline turned out to be the killer’s search for the couple. He’s a skilled hitman and knows how to catch his prey no matter where he or she or they disappear to. Did You Hear About The Morgans? The Power Player Lifestyle Magazine gives this film a 3.0 on the 5-point PowerMeter. For more information and trailers of the film go to: http://www.DidYouHearAboutTheMorgans.com

“WHITE WEDDING”

Movie review by Christopher Brown

Queen Victoria’s Wedding, starring Natalie Desselle Reid (“B.A.P.S.,” “Eve”), is a Short Film that will debut in Southern California on the campus of El Camino College. Hosted by the El Camino College Film Club, the screening – on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 – will show in the Marsee Auditorium. Queen Victoria’s Wedding is the latest project from director and executive producer BJ Rouse of Rouse House Entertainment, in partnership with Mighty Moore Entertainment.  Sponsors of the film include educational foundation Lets Erase The Stigma (“Lets,” http://www.letserasethestigma.org) and national corporate entities.  “We’re fortunate that Lets and our other sponsors have stepped up to support this project,” says Ms. Rouse, “With an increase in those being diagnosed with some form of Mental Illness, it is practically imperative that more stories be told.”

“Lets is excited to help produce this Short Film,” said Phil Fontilea, executive director and founder of Lets.  “Our goal is to erase the stigma of Mental Illness and with films like Wedding, we begin to rip back the veil and educate others on the importance of treatment.”  Mighty Moore Entertainment president, Shenita Moore, fully agrees, “The first time I read the script, I remember telling BJ that I was ‘ready to do whatever it took to help get this film made’. It's not just an important message for the African American community, but every community.”

Queen Victoria’s Wedding takes a searing look at the agonizing world of a mother diagnosed with a mental disorder and her sporadic use of medication.  The interaction between Queen Victoria, her daughter Shakina and her own mother, Mona, makes this film a must see.  An invitation-only VIP Reception will kick off the evening, followed by the screening and an informative Q&A about the making of the film.  Queen Victoria’s Wedding was produced by Rouse House Entertainment, Aminah Abdul-Jabaar, Mighty Moore Entertainment and Lets.  Ms. Reid’s co-stars include Nieko Mann (“Friday Night Lights”), Carmen Twillie (“Six Feet Under”), Tyreese Burnett (“Drumline”), Shenita Moore (“Grey’s Anatomy), Poetri (“House of Payne”), Kendra C. Johnson (“Phat Girlz”), newcomers Todd Moore and Jay Rockaway along with a special appearance by screenwriter, director and producer Antwone Fisher (“Antwone Fisher,” “ATL”).  At release time, confirmed screening sponsors include El Camino College Film Club, Lets, Mighty Moore Entertainment and Rouse House Entertainment. The screening will begin at 6:30p and will be open to the public. In lieu of paid admission, donations will be accepted.  Email RSVP requests to QueenVictoriasScreeningRSVP@new-venture.com or call (310) 772-8209. RSVP by January 20, 2010 to guarantee admission.

About Rouse House Entertainment

Rouse House Entertainment offers theater-quality, awe-motivating entertainment whether it be via short-film, feature film, television or the Internet. At the helm of Rouse House is BJ Rouse, a Cosby Program alum.  The Cosby Program, also known as The Guy A. Hanks & Marvin Miller Screenwriting Program, was established by Drs. Bill and Camille Cosby in 1993 at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.  The Program is a fifteen-week intensive workshop designed with the two-fold purpose of assisting writers in the completion of a film or television script and to deepen the participants appreciation for and comprehension of African American history or culture.

I was charmed by a cleverly written and masterfully directed film that helps us laugh at love and our pursuit of it.  My interest and enjoyment in foreign films is growing and White Wedding will be on my top ten list.  This South African comedy, written by Kenneth Nkosi, Rapulana Seiphemo, Jann Turner and produced by British writer Ken Follet, is a heartwarming tale of a groom desperately trying to get to the church on time.  A theatrical concept that always seems to entertain us and this adaptation on the theme will be no exception.  The uniqueness of this film is that it takes place in the beautiful countryside of South Africa between Johannesburg and Cape Town.  This madcap comedy is a road trip that occurs over a five day period starting in Johannesburg and ending in Cape Town.

The movie juxtaposes three scenarios, which intertwine and culminate in an everyone wins conclusion. Elvis (Kenneth Nkosi) and Ayanda (Msutwana) are engaged to be married with their dream wedding literally days away.  Elvis needs to get Ayanda’s grandmother and his best man, Tumi (Rapulana Seiphemo) to Cape Town. Our movie opens at the Johannesburg airport, where we our first introduced to our good-hearted groom as he is helping a lost child in the busy terminal.  Elvis’s best man and friend Tumi is waiting for him in a neighboring town setting up his last night of fun as a bachelor.  Being a good samaritan causes Elvis to just miss his bus and the beginning of his mishap adventure to Cape Town begins.

Of course, Ayanda is charged with the duty of attending to the finishing touches and last minute details: final dress-fittings, venue and wedding preparations.  With all of the typical pre-wedding jitters Ayanda’s emotions are infused with her mother’s expectations, cultural rituals, a gay wedding planner and of course the villain Tony(Mbulelo Grootboom). A smooth talking ex-fiancée comes to rekindle some old emotions.

In the meantime, Rose (Jodie Whittaker), a young English doctor is on holiday with her best friend trying to forget her cheating fiancée she left back in London.  As the girls head for Cape Town, a night of merrily drinking to girl power and female loyalty leads to too much truth and a startling revelation.  In brief, the girls have a falling out and Rose hitches a ride with the Tumi/Elvis convoy from Durban. What follows is a funny clash of cultures, traditions and mixed messages as the road trip hits one snag after another in a race to get the groom to the wedding in time.
As this unlikely trio continues their journey together onto Cape Town we explore the meaning of friendship,  matters of the heart and the human need for loving companionship.  In a very comedic way this foreign genre helps us realize that regardless of culture the phrase “it’s complicated” is understood by  men and women all over the world.

White Wedding has an inherent local charm. The script is naturally funny without feeling contrived and kindles the heartwarming aspects of friendship, love, loyalty and endurance.  While White Wedding uses its host of characters and stereotypes for comic effects, they are just as quickly dismissed with a good dose of laughter.  The plot isn’t watertight, but the performances help to plug the holes and the even pacing keeps the road movie on track. Kenneth Nkosi and Rapulano Seiphemo have great on-screen chemistry, which translates into a real feeling of propinquity. Nkosi’s performance is balanced, giving the average guy a fighting chance, while playing for the laughs simultaneously. Seiphemo supports Nkosi’s quest, as the comic foil, adding a touch of class and down-to-earth realism to the film. Jodie Whittaker and Zandile Msutwana share much of the limelight with solid performances that represent two sides to the institution of marriage.

I will not ruin the ending but it leaves you asking questions about your own quest for love and realizing how your own personal story is probably full of its own funny mishaps that can be overcome with a little bit of laughter and a whole lot of love
